Strong Contextual Felicity and Felicitous Underspecification

چکیده
Consider the class of contextually sensitive expressions whose context independent meanings do not by themselves suffice to secure semantic values for those expressions in contexts. Demonstratives and deictically used pronouns are the most obvious examples of such expressions. But arguably gradable adjectives, modals, possessives, tense, quantifiers, expressions that take implicit arguments (‘ready’) and ‘only’ are examples as well. I’ll call such expressions supplementives to highlight the fact that they need some sort of supplementation in contexts to acquire semantic values in those contexts. The purpose of the present paper is to investigate two properties of at least some supplementives that prima facie seem to be in tension with one another. On the one hand, in at least some cases in which a supplementive is used in context but there is insufficient information in the context for hearers to recover a unique semantic value for the expression, the result is infelicity. On the other hand, in at least some cases a supplementive can be felicitously used in a case in which there is not enough information in the context to recover a unique semantic value for the expression. I’ll argue that all supplementives have both

The Effect of Lexicon-based Debates on the Felicity of Lexical Equivalents in Translating Literary Texts by Iranian EFL Learners
This study was an attempt to investigate the effect of lexicon-based debates on the felicity of lexical equivalents in translating literary texts by Iranian EFL learners. To fulfill the purpose of this study, 59 university students, majoring in English Translation, were randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups from a total of 73 students based on their performance on a mock TOE...
متن کاملThe pragmatics of negation across contexts
Why do some negative sentences sound strange, even when they are both true and grammatical? We explore the pragmatics of negation by examining adults’ explicit felicity judgments of negative sentences in context. In Experiment 1, we found that a pragmatically supportive context elicited higher felicity ratings for negative sentences, and that negative sentences expressing nonexistence were rate...
متن کاملFelicity and Presupposition Triggers
Many current pragmatic approaches to presupposition, beginning at least with Stalnaker (1974), are based on a notion of felicity. Presuppositions are requirements a sentence places upon a context for an utterance of that sentence to be felicitous. These requirements in turn are induced by the presence of certain presupposition triggers, such as lexical items like factive verbs, or constructions...
متن کاملThe Pragmatics of Insensitive Assessments
In assessing the veridicality of utterances, we normally seem to assess the satisfaction of conditions that the speaker had been concerned to get right in making the utterance. However, the debate about assessor-relativism about epistemic modals, predicates of taste, gradable adjectives and conditionals has been largely driven by cases in which seemingly felicitous assessments of utterances are...
